Plant one row.Sixty seconds.
A furlong is a furrow long: about 660 feet, one straight pass of a plow. Plow one here. It takes a minute, and at the end you'll pick one client to thank this week. We'll show you how to thank a client for a referral, plainly.

Reduced motion is on, so here is the still version: one row, already plowed.
Press and hold to plow one row. The space bar works too.
Hold the space bar or press and hold the field. Letting go pauses the row. There is no wrong way to do it.
Done
One row. That's how referrals work.
660 feet in one pass.
Who's one client you'll thank this week?
The one who sends people your way. First name only. It stays on this device. We never see it.
Why bother
Kitces Research found advisors who thank clients for referrals see more of them: 5.2% referral-driven growth with a personal thank-you, against 4.1% with none.2 A gift on top did better still in their data, which is a question for your gift policy. The note is the part anyone can do.
No gift, no review request, nothing tied to whether the friend becomes a client, and nothing that says they did. This is a plain-language template, not legal or compliance advice. Your compliance reviewer has the final word.
Until then, the note above is the whole assignment this week.
Your row
A card with your row on it, the one you just plowed.
The note
How to thank a client for a referral.
When a client sends a friend your way, they put their own name on the line. Most people want to know two things afterward: that you noticed, and that their friend was treated well. A short personal note covers both. It's also good business. In the 2026 Kitces Research data, advisors who thank clients for referrals had a referral-driven growth rate of 5.2%, against 4.1% for advisors who didn't.2
When to send it
Within a week of the introduction, and before you know whether the friend becomes a client. That timing keeps the thanks about the trust it took to make the introduction. Waiting for the outcome turns the note into a scorecard.
What to write
Three things, in a few sentences. Name the introduction ("Thank you for passing my name to Dan"). Name what it took ("Sending a friend to your financial advisor takes trust"). Say what happens next without details ("Whatever comes of it, they'll get the same care you do"). Then sign it. Handwritten on a card beats email, but an email you actually send beats a card you don't.
What to leave out
Leave out gifts tied to the referral, and never pair a thank-you with a request for a review. Paying for referrals, in cash or in kind, can bring in the SEC Marketing Rule's compensation requirements and your firm's gift policy.3 Leave out anything about the friend's situation or whether they signed on. Under SEC privacy rules, the fact that someone is your client can count as their private information.4 And leave out the ask for more referrals. The note works better when it asks for nothing.
A sample note
Dear Margaret,
Thank you for passing my name to [friend's first name]. Sending a friend to your financial advisor takes trust, and I noticed.
Whatever comes of it, they'll get the same care you do, and anything they tell me stays between us, the same as it does for you.
See you at our next review.
[Your name]
Why there's a row first
Because the note is easy to put off and a minute is easy to give. Plowing one row takes sixty seconds if you keep it slow. By the end you've usually thought of the client. Furlong, the firm, is named for the furlong: a furrow long, about 660 feet. Every referral travels one row, from a name on a card to a search that night to a first meeting. We work on keeping that row straight.
Questions
Short answers.
Should a financial advisor send a gift for a referral?
A gift tied to a referral can bring in the SEC Marketing Rule's compensation rules and your firm's gift policy.3 A note with nothing attached avoids the question. If you want to add a gift, check with your compliance reviewer first, keep a record, and never pair it with a request for a review.
Should I tell my client their friend became a client?
Best not to, unless the friend says it's fine. Whether someone is your client can count as their private information under SEC privacy rules.4 Thank the client for the introduction, not the outcome.
Is a thank-you note to one client an advertisement?
A personal note to one client generally falls outside the Marketing Rule's definition of an advertisement, which mostly excludes one-on-one communications.3 A template mailed to many clients at once is a different question. Your compliance reviewer has the final word.
Does the name I type go anywhere?
No. It's kept in your browser's local storage on this device so the note can use it. It isn't sent to Furlong, and it isn't part of the share card or the email.
What if my row came out crooked?
Then it looks like a real one. Rows wobble where you let go or hurry. Nobody fails at this. If you want another go, there's a button for that.
